Probus

AMPC (Asquith Mixed Probus Club) one of about ten such Probus clubs locally, and one of hundreds in New South Wales.

Probus grew out of Rotary. From small beginnings in the United Kingdom in 1965, it expanded to New Zealand In 1974, and to Australia in 1976. These countries are where it is strongest now. It spread to Canada in 1987, and now is in the USA, Belgium, India, South Africa and other countries: about 23 altogether. There are around 2000 Probus clubs in the UK, and probably approaching half that number in Australia.

Purpose

The purpose of the Club (AMPC) is ‘to advance intellectual and cultural interests among adult persons who have retired or are semi-retired from their former occupations’.

To do this, AMPC holds ‘regular meetings and arranges activities to provide opportunities for fellowship, the development of acquaintance and social interaction’. In addition, it strives ‘to be seen as a worthwhile organisation by the local community’.

Who may join

Membership of the club is ‘open to retired and semi-retired professional and business people and others from any worthy vocation who appreciate and value opportunities for social contact with others in similar circumstances.' Membership of AMPC is intended ‘primarily for residents of Asquith and surrounding suburbs and districts’.

Size and balance

The target size of the Cub is 150 members, and as a mixed club it endeavours to ‘maintain a gender balance of not more than 60% of any one gender’

Our Meetings

As can be seen in this website, the Club has a monthly meeting, at which there is a guest speaker, who will talk about a subject of general interest. We meet at Magpies Club, Waitara on the first Thursday of the month at 10:15 for 10:30. Visitors who are thinking of joining are welcome.

Special Interests

The Club sponsors many special interest groups, such as: walks, general outings, dining out, mahjong, and more. Once or twice a year a trip away lasting several days is organised. There are also ‘pot-luck dinners’ for groups of four or six, in the homes of members.
